Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the prestigious trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league winners and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 seasons.
