Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
