A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
